February 23 - 27

Hello fantastic families of Lane Middle School! I have to apologize I have not sent out an updated email!!

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Third Quarter is under way!  We are almost two weeks in for the new quarter, so may notice there are already some scores (and even grades) for students’ classes.

The process for determining Math Placements for 7th grade has small changes this year. As always, student performance in their math class assessments and on the district “CAR” test are factors to help consider their placement. The slight change is in the “Performance Task” students will complete in class by March 6th; the Performance Task is replacing students’ OAKS Math results as a determining factor. This change is meant to align with the state’s move from using the OAKS Assessments to Smarter Balance Assessments. For more details on this change, please see the attached letter.

In Math we...  we are focusing on evaluating and solving algebraic expressions. For the next couple of weeks we will have additional practice with concepts from the following CCSS Content Standards and learning target:  6.EE.Ai – I can evaluate algebraic expressions.   Students will be able to apply their knowledge by:
¨  Write and evaluate numerical expressions involving whole number exponents.¨  Solve real-world problems using the order of operations that includes exponents.

We will have homework two days this week. Students will also be completing their next work sample in class and completing their Performance Task for our “CAR” test.

Important Dates:

Coming up in March

March 10 | Cleveland High Shadow Day | 10 am - 1 pm
March 18 | 2-Hour Late Opening
March 23-27 | No School| Spring Break

Thanks for reading! As always, feel free to contact me if you have any questions or concerns

January 5th - 9th

Hello fantastic families of Lane Middle school! I hope you had a wonderful and restful winter break! This week in Math we will focus on finishing up the following standards.
Learning Targets
I can …
I can apply my knowledge to…
6.G.Ai – I can solve problems by modeling 2-D shapes and finding their area.

¨  Find the area of polygons by composing into rectangles.
¨  Find the area of polygons by decomposing into triangles and other shapes.
¨  Use coordinates to find the length of a side with one common coordinate.
¨  Solve real-world problems involving area of complex shapes.
¨  Draw polygons in the coordinate plane given coordinates of the vertices.
6.G.Aii – I can solve problems by modeling 3-D shapes and finding their surface area and volume.

¨  Apply the formula: V = lwh.
¨  Apply the formula: V = bh.
¨  Represent 3-D figures using nets to find surface area.
¨  Find the volume of a right rectangular prism with fractional edge lengths using a visual module.
¨  Apply surface area and volume in real-world and mathematical contents.

We will have homework on Monday, and Tuesday. Students will also be working on the following IXL strands:

Have a great week! Ms. Silas

November 24th -26th

Hello fantastic families of Lane Middle School! Hope this email finds you well!

This week in Math:
For the next two weeks we will focus on the following common core standards: 6.NS.5, 6.NS.6, 6.NS.7, 6.NS.8, 6.G3.  Students will focus on plotting points, answering questions about quadrants, reflecting those points along the x and y axis, creating a polygons on a coordinate grid and finding the perimeter and area of their polygons and explaining the use of absolute value in calculating distances. Then we will start our next book, Covering and Surroundings.

Homework:
Students will have a coordinate grid graphing project. This will be due on Wednesday November 26th.

Just a reminder, students had a Math Storybook/Comic Strip Homework project, due on Monday November 23rd.
Math Storybook/Comic Strip Homework Project
Who: Ms. Silas’ Math Students’
What it Means: The idea of this project is for students to create a storybook or comic strip for younger students to assist them in understanding mathematics. A good storybook/comic strip should be colorfully illustrated and legible.
What Must Be Done: Students will have to create a storybook or comic strip this is at least 10 pages/frames long. It must be colorfully illustrated, legible, and present a fundamental concept discussed in this year’s math class. This book or comic strip does not have to be made out of anything expensive, but it must look professional.

Have a wonderful week!
